Shared Parental Leave (SPL)

Shared parental leave (SPL) is designed to give parents more flexibility in sharing the care of their child in the first year following birth or adoption. A mother/main adopter can choose to end their maternity/adoption leave early and exchange it for up to 50 weeks of SPL. Up to 37 weeks of maternity pay can also be exchanged for shared parental leave and pay. This shared parental leave can then be divided up between the parents and they can take this separately or together.

However, take up of SPL has been very low and the complexity of the SPL system has been criticised. To help tackle these issues, the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has launched a new online tool to help expectant parents and their employers to navigate the SPL system. The online tool will allow expectant parents to check their eligibility for the SPL scheme and calculate their SPL pay entitlement. They can also download all the documents they need to notify their employer of their intention to take advantage of SPL.
